Hide Private Chats: How to Use WhatsApp's Official "Chat Lock" Feature
Last month something really embarrassing happened to me. My younger brother picked up my phone while I was in the washroom and started scrolling through WhatsApp. Luckily he didn’t open the wrong chat but it scared me a lot. After that day I decided I need to hide some private chats properly. I had heard about WhatsApp’s official Chat Lock feature but never used it before. So I spent some time learning it properly and now I use it every day. In this article I will tell you everything in very simple words so even a child can understand. I have also added the latest updates from 2026.
This feature is completely official from WhatsApp. It is not some third party app. It is safe and easy to use. Many people in Pakistan and all over the world are now using it to hide their private conversations from family members or friends who sometimes use their phone.
What is WhatsApp Chat Lock?
Chat Lock is a special feature that lets you hide any chat (even group chats) behind a lock. When you lock a chat, it moves to a separate folder called “Locked chats”. This folder is protected by your phone’s fingerprint, face ID or a secret PIN code. The best part is that the other person in the chat will never know that you have locked their conversation. Notifications also become private. Instead of showing the name and message, it just says “WhatsApp: 1 new message”.
In 2026 WhatsApp made this feature even better. Now you can completely hide the Locked chats folder using a secret code so that even if someone opens your WhatsApp, they will not see any locked chats at all.
What you need before starting
- Latest version of WhatsApp (update it from Play Store or App Store)
- A phone with fingerprint or face recognition (most phones have it now)
- Some chats that you want to keep private
That’s all. No extra app needed.
How to Lock Chats on Android (Step by Step)
I use Android phone so let me tell you the exact steps I follow:
Step 1: Open WhatsApp and go to the chat you want to hide. It can be any single chat or even a group.
Step 2: Tap on the person’s name or group name at the very top of the screen.
Step 3: Scroll down a little. You will see an option called “Lock chat”. Tap on it.
Step 4: WhatsApp will ask you to confirm with your fingerprint or face ID. Just do it.
Step 5: After locking, the chat will disappear from your main list and move to the Locked chats folder.
I always do one extra thing. After locking I swipe down on my main chat list to check if the Locked chats folder appears. If it does, that means it is working.
How to Lock Chats on iPhone
The steps are almost same on iPhone but slightly different:
Step 1:
Open the chat you want to lock.
Step 2:
Tap the contact or group name at the top.
Step 3:
Scroll down and tap “Lock Chat”.
Step 4:
Use Face ID or your passcode to confirm.
Step 5:
Done! The chat will move to Locked chats folder.
My friend who uses iPhone 15 told me it works perfectly on his phone too. He locks his work chats so his family members don’t see them.
How to Use Secret Code (This is the best trick in 2026)
This is my favorite part. WhatsApp now lets you create a secret code so that the Locked chats folder stays completely hidden.
Here is how to do it:
- Go to Settings in WhatsApp
- Tap on Privacy
- Tap on Chat lock
- Turn on “Hide locked chats” or create a Secret Code
- Set a 4 or 6 digit PIN that only you know
After doing this, even if someone swipes down on your chat list, they will not see the Locked chats folder. To see your hidden chats you have to type the secret code in the search bar. This is really useful when you share your phone with others sometimes.
I set my secret code as my lucky number. It is easy for me to remember but hard for others to guess.
How to Open Your Locked Chats
There are two ways:
Way 1: Swipe down slowly on your main WhatsApp chat list. You will see “Locked chats” folder. Tap on it and use fingerprint or face ID.
Way 2: If you have hidden the folder using secret code, just type your secret code in the search bar at the top. The folder will appear.
Once you open it, all your locked chats will be there. You can read messages normally. When you close WhatsApp, they go back to hidden mode automatically.
Important Tips I Learned
- You can lock as many chats as you want. There is no limit.
- Even muted chats can be locked.
- If someone sends you a message in a locked chat, you will still get a notification but it will not show the name or message preview. This is good for privacy.
- WhatsApp Web also supports Chat Lock now. You just need to enter your secret code on the computer too.
- Always remember your secret code. If you forget it, you can still recover your chats but it takes some steps (I will explain later).
- This feature works the same on all Android phones and iPhones in 2026.
Common Problems and How I Fixed Them
Problem 1:
I cannot find the Lock chat option. Fix: Make sure your WhatsApp is updated to the latest version. Old versions do not have this feature.
Problem 2:
Fingerprint is not working. Fix: Go to your phone settings and make sure fingerprint or face ID is set up properly. Sometimes you need to re-add your fingerprint.
Problem 3:
Locked chats folder is not appearing. Fix: Try swiping down very slowly on the chat list. Also check if you have hidden it using secret code.
Problem 4:
I forgot my secret code. Fix: Don’t worry. Open WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Chat lock > and there is an option to recover or clear locked chats. But remember, clearing will remove the lock from all chats.
I faced problem number 3 once and it was just because I was swiping too fast. After swiping slowly it worked.
My Personal Experience
I have been using Chat Lock for more than two months now. I mostly lock my family group chats and some private conversations with close friends. It gives me peace of mind. Now even if my phone is with someone, I don’t have to worry.
One day my cousin was using my phone to send a message to his friend. He scrolled through my chats but could not find anything because I had locked the important ones. He asked me “Bhai where are all your chats?” and I just smiled. It felt really good.
The best thing is that it is completely free and made by WhatsApp itself. No need to install any risky app from outside.
Final Words
If you want to keep some chats private from family members, friends or anyone who uses your phone, then WhatsApp’s official Chat Lock feature is the perfect solution in 2026. It is simple, safe and works really well.
Just remember these three things:
- Always update WhatsApp first
- Use fingerprint or secret code for extra safety
- Practice once or twice so you don’t forget how to open the locked folder
I hope this guide helped you. If you still face any problem, just tell me which phone you are using (Android or iPhone) and I will guide you more.
Privacy is very important these days. Use this feature and stay safe!
